It’s hard to believe that such a small animal can cause so much lawn damage, overnight a lawn can go from immaculate to being full of small mounds of earth known as “ mole hills “, very often all down to just one mole.
Let's start with a few mole facts, the mole grows to about 15cm ( 6 inches ) in length and weighs around 70g to 100g ( 2.5 ounces to 3.5 ounces ), it has large front feet which are not in proportion to the rest of it’s body, the moles pelt which moults in spring and autumn is such that you can stroke it in any direction ( like velvet ). They are solitary living animals, except for mating, where they produce 1 litter per year with between 2 and 7 young ( usually 3 to 5 ) with a normal life span of around 3 years, with their diet being made up of worms and ground insects.
The fact that the mole spends most of the time underground makes it hard to know exactly how it goes about its daily routine but we do know that it builds a series of tunnels both shallow and deep which it travels through whilst foraging for food, we also know that once a “ good “ tunnel system has been built this will be used by other moles once the originator has gone.
In most cases if your lawn is no larger than a football pitch then you will only be visited by between 1 and 3 moles at any one time, how often you are visited by these little characters will very much depend on the overall mole population in your area and whether the neighbouring grounds are doing any form of mole control. To deal with mole problems patience and the use high quality traps is essential. SJA Pest Control offer a range of services from one off jobs to ongoing mole control work.
