It can take a few weeks to fully rid a property of a flea problem mainly due to how the flea develops.
so just to briefly explain the flea cycle, the female can live for upto two years during which time she can lay 1000 eggs, these eggs develop into larvae which then spin a cocoon ( pupae stage ) where it matures into an adult. It can take two to three weeks for the larvae to turn into pupa and then at least a further two weeks for the adult to emerge from the pupae. The adult flea itself is about 4 mm long brownish black in colour , very thin , cannot fly but can easily jump 40cm high and a distance of approx half a meter per jump. Key to obtaining full eradication of a flea problem is to treat the animal (s )involved with a prescribed product from your vet and then to fully treat the property. Treatments should start with thoroughly vacuuming the property then treating all floors and fabric covered furniture and curtains with a high quality insecticide containing a knockdown ingredient to deal with the adults, a growth regulator to prevent the fleas fully developing and a residual product to give some longer lasting effect. Pet and human bedding plus clothing should not be treated with insecticide but washed at a minimum of 60 degrees, dry cleaned or even steam laundered. Regular thorough vacuuming of your home will help to rid the property of any flea eggs ( just remember to empty the vacuum or remove and dispose of the bag outside as soon as you have vacuumed )
